Feature Story: Readers talk tacos before National Taco Day

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we had less negativity and more tacos? Whomever posted that quote out in the world wide web spoke a mouth full of goodness.

Isabel Quintero said, “Tacos are like what the voices of a hundred angels singing Bob Dylan while sitting on rainbows and playing banjos would taste like if that sound were edible.”

In his book, Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food, Jeffrey M. Pilcher believes that the early tacos were “based on rolled and fried taquitos served with avocado sauce.”

Made like an envelope either in a hard shell or a soft shell, the taco has always been easy to hold and relatively quick to make and eat. Kathyrn Whitbourn on January 8, 2019 published an article called, 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Tacos,” on HowStuffWorks.Com.

Whitbourn found that in 2019, Americans were recorded to have eaten more than 4.5 billion tacos. That is a lot of tacos.

According to her research, Whitbourn discovered “tacos came to the United States in the early 1900s, along with the Mexican migrants who worked the mines and railroads.”

As most people know, you can put whatever you want in a taco shell. It could be filled with hamburger meat, pork, chicken, fish or for the vegetarian – vegetarian meats or lots of veggies.

With October 4, 2019 being named as ‘National Taco Day,’ the Murphy Gazette asked its readers about their love of tacos.

A mom and grandmother, Pam P. of north Georgia said, “We love tacos but have to fix soft and hard because the only man in this house only likes hard shell tacos. Love to pick up salsa from Mexican restaurants to go with our tacos for sure and cheese dip adds to our meal.”

“I love tacos. I grew up in Texas, so the fast food chains just don’t do it for me. I prefer my own. I love all kinds of tacos-shrimp, beef, chicken and steak. My favorite are street tacos. We don’t usually do Taco Tuesdays, but just whenever we feel like eating tacos,” Cyndi S. of middle Georgia remarked.

Another central Georgia mom, Rhonda D. said,”I eat both kind. I make tacos but not necessarily on Tuesday. I eat tacos with ground beef or steak. It depends on my mood which one I eat. I won’t eat tacos at Del Taco or Taco Bell just because I’m spoiled by my tacos.”

Our only man who responded to the survey is from Georgia. “I personally eat tacos with a hard shell, meat and cheese. To , the taco is more like a drive-down memory lane,” Mackenzie B. wrote. “It’s a meal which I often ate as a child probably because they were cheap and fast to prepare.”

Mackenzie B. added, “I do generally participate in Taco Tuesdays at a restaurant. Now it’s more about the gathering and socializing and simple fact of it is, they are still one of the cheapest meals you can eat. Four tacos and two beers are just under eleven dollars? Who could complain about that?”

Mom of three and artist, Jennifer E. from northwest Georgia, said, “I love tacos. The shells can be hard, soft and sometimes both with the Double Decker Taco Supreme® at Taco Bell®. I guess I like them because they taste good. I don’t necessarily do Taco Tuesday, mainly because I don’t plan ahead enough. I make shrimp or fish tacos at home with soft tortillas.”

Rachel Caine one stated, “Everything goes better with tacos.”
